GPS Panic Button Will Be Mandatory In Public Transport Startin’ April 1!

Where | New Delhi

Startin’ April 1st all taxis, buses and public transport vehicles will have to install GPS and an alert button. However, the move by the transport ministry has barred auto rickshaws from installing the GPS or alert button.

Initially, the ministry had proposed mandatory installation of CCTV cameras in buses having more than 23 seats. But the proposal was dropped due to privacy concerns.

Auto rickshaws were barred from installing the GPS or alert button since they are open. Stating that passengers are more vulnerable in vehicles with closed structures, all DTC buses will soon have the required machines installed.

The move sounds pretty cool right? And considering the rising tension regarding women safety in public transport – the move is a great initiative!
